The Parshall Flume is the most widely used type of flume for fixed flow monitoring installations. A special shaped open channel flow section can be installed in a ditch or canal to measure the flow rate. Parshall Flumes are sized by throat width, and conform to standardized dimensions published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation.

Palmer Bowlus metering flumes have been widely used for measuring water and wastewater in manholes, open channels or pipelines that are not under any pressure. This flume is typically installed in a “U” shaped channel fed by a pipeline such as storm drains and sewers. The Palmer-Bowlus flume requires little redesign or special modification of regular pipes for installation.

Montana Flumes conform to the standard dimensions for Parshall flumes except that “the portion of the flume downstream from the end of the converging section” is removed. The Montana flume applications are limited due to submergence but conform to the discharge characteristics of the similarly sized Parshall flume. Typical Applications are industrial process, irrigation and agricultural runoff.
